Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore State Parks

Summer is upon us and what better way to spend your Indiana vacation than in the great outdoors at some of our beautiful, northern Indiana parks and recreation areas?

There are lots of great northern Indiana parks for you to picnic, hike, bike, explore, and relax at. Here are just a few that come to mind:

Jane’s Parks in Bremen, IN
Jane’s Park in the southeast Bremen on Woodies Lane has a number of nice features including picnicking shelters, playground equipment and sports fields, and the park’s name spelled out in topiary. Potato Creek State Park
Potato Creek State Park is in north-central Indiana about fifteen minutes northwest of Bremen. Potato Creek State Park features a wide array of activities and facilities for year-round use.

There are 6 hiking trails of various lengths and difficulty as well as a walking trail, a bicycling trail, and a mountain biking trail. Other activities include boating, fishing, and swimming on the 327-acre Worster Lake, and a playground for children.

Potato Creek State Park also has a Nature Center offering interpretive services plus wildlife observation areas in the varied environments of the park, which include fields, woodlands, prairie, and wetlands.

Potato Creek State Park picnicking shelters offer protection from the elements and a place to cook out but this is a popular park so, if you intend to use them, making reservations is advisable.

Lake Michigan and Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore
We’ve mentioned the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore before but it’s worth bringing up again!

Just 45 minutes from Bremen, the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, on the southern edge of Lake Michigan, features over 45 miles of dune trails, 15 miles of shoreline, and a wide variety of other environments, including prairies, swamps, marshes, rivers, and forests.

Indiana Dunes State Park has seven hiking trails of varying difficulty, some of which offer stunning views of Lake Michigan and a chance to take in some of the varied environments. For cyclists, Calumet Bike Trail runs through the park to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore as well as to neighboring communities.

Fishing and bird watching are popular activities at Indiana Dunes State Park, along with exploring the sandy beaches of Lake Michigan. Other favorites include visiting the Heron Rookery, horseback riding on the Glenwood Dunes Trail, and touring Pinhook Bog.
